ADHD Assessments

Our ADHD and AuDHD assessments are provided by our neurodivergent and neuro-affirming team members. We have experience assessing 'internalised' or 'masked' ADHD profiles in people who don't fit the mainstream stereotypes.

We are also able to provide differential diagnoses between neurodivergence, other neurodevelopmental differences, complex trauma, and mental health conditions. We offer a trauma-informed service and understand that ADHD'ers are more likely to have experienced trauma than their neurotypical peers. We are often looking for neurodivergence AND trauma together rather than thinking it has to be one or the other.

Assessment Process

Our neurodiversity-affirming ADHD assessments consist of 2 to 3 hours of talking about your possible ADHD traits using a structured diagnostic interview - the DIVA-5 (for adults) or the Young DIVA (for kids and teens under 18). Depending on your preference, this assessment can be broken into 1 x two-hour appointments or 2 x one-hour appointments.

We will ask you about ADHD traits in adulthood and childhood and ask you to complete online questionnaires about possible ADHD traits. If you're around 25 years of age or under, it can be useful to ask a parent, carer, or another adult who knew you during childhood to accompany you to some of the assessment appointments to assist us in obtaining information about your ADHD traits across your life. If you're over 25 years of age, you may also bring a support person to the appointments if you wish.

ADHD medication & psychiatry referrals

Choosing a psychologist or psychiatrist/paediatrician assessment

You have the option of choosing to have your ADHD assessment with a psychologist, with a psychiatrist, or with a paediatrician (for children and teenagers). If you are interested in trying ADHD medication, you can see your GP and get a referral straight to a psychiatrist or paediatrician who specializes in ADHD. As psychiatrists and paediatricians are medical doctors, they can assess you for ADHD and prescribe ADHD medication if they think it is medically needed.

As psychologists, we can assess and diagnose ADHD, but we cannot prescribe medication. Sometimes, paediatricians ask families to obtain an assessment and report from a psychologist before they will confirm a diagnosis of ADHD in a child or teenager and prescribe medication. This is not common practice for adult clients who see psychiatrists. Typically, psychiatrists will conduct their own assessment of ADHD before prescribing medication.

Are our reports 'accepted' by psychiatrists?

A frequently asked question we receive from clients is whether our reports are 'accepted' by psychiatrists. While our reports are 'accepted' by psychiatrists as evidence, they will generally still want to conduct their own assessment. This is because ADHD stimulant medications are highly restricted medications - they are classified by the Australian government as Schedule 8 restricted substances. This is the highest restriction rating the government can give to a legal drug. Medications are classified as Schedule 8 restricted substances when they have a higher risk of abuse (or addiction) than other medications. The Schedule 8 classification means that even if a client has an ADHD report written by a psychologist, a psychiatrist will need to undertake due diligence to make sure they agree with the ADHD diagnosis before they prescribe a highly restricted medication. Every psychiatrist has their own process for assessments. Sometimes, a report from a psychologist may make a psychiatrist's assessment shorter, but we cannot guarantee that this will be the case, as a psychiatrist needs to ensure they are satisfied with the diagnosis before they prescribe medication. A good place to start is to speak to your GP and ask what psychiatrists they refer to and what their assessment process is.

Why would someone choose an ADHD assessment with a psychologist?

Some of our adult clients wish to have an ADHD assessment conducted by a psychologist, either before seeing a psychiatrist or instead of seeing a psychiatrist. Some of the reasons people choose to have their ADHD assessment with a psychologist are:

  • They are not interested in trying ADHD medication and would like the assessment to better understand themselves and their neurotype.

  • To have written documentation of their ADHD neurotype and what criteria they meet or don't meet. It is not typical for psychiatrists to write full, comprehensive reports like psychologists do. Written reports can be provided to schools or workplaces to request accommodations or adjustments.

  • Some of our clients have told us that an assessment with a psychologist feels more holistic or comprehensive. Our reports are written from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective, and many people feel validated by having their experiences and difficulties documented in a report.

  • Sometimes, psychiatrists do not appear to have told their clients that they have been officially confirmed to be an ADHDer (or diagnosed with ADHD) despite prescribing ADHD medication to them. Rest assured that if a medical doctor has prescribed you a highly restricted Schedule 8 medication, they have confirmed that you have a diagnosis of ADHD (or at least, a provisional diagnosis where they prescribe the medication to see how you respond).

  • There are different assessment rates, depending on your assessor's experience.

  • Assessments with our senior assessors are $2000 for interviews, questionnaires, and full report.

  • Please see the psychologist's profile page for the cost of an assessment with your assessor.

*The fees listed here are based on a standard assessment with up to 3 hours of interview time. If your assessment is complex and we estimate more time is needed, the fee will be higher. Our admin team will contact you if your assessment may require more work so we can provide you with an updated quote.

Fees for AuDHD Assessments

Our neurodiversity-affirming AuDHD assessments (i.e. an assessmennt of both Autism and ADHD) consist of around 4 to 6 hours of talking about your possible Autistic and ADHD traits using the MIGDAS-2 and DIVA-5 interview tools. Fees for combined Autism + ADHD assessments are $2500 to $3000 for the assessment plus a full report

Funding and Rebates

You can pay privately for an assessment and report.

You may be able to receive a health fund rebate, depending on your health fund, level of cover, and who will be assessing you. If you would like to obtain health fund rebates for your assessment, please tell us you would like your assessment with a registered psychologist, as our provisional psychologists are not able to provide you with a health fund rebate.

You may be able to use your NDIS funding to pay for an assessment, depending on your plan goals. You can check with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC), your support coordinator or your plan manager (if you have one) to see if your assessment can be covered.

If you are under 25 years old, you may be able to access a Medicare rebate for your ADHD assessment if you have a referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Unfortunately, your GP will not be able to write you a referral for this type of assessment.

If you are over 25 years old, unfortunately, due to Medicare rules, you will not be able to access Medicare rebates to pay for your assessment. This means you do not need a referral or mental health care plan from your doctor to book or attend an assessment as no rebate is possible.

Age groups we assess

Adults

Teenagers over 13 years of age

Children*

*Assessments for children up to 12 years of age are best done in person, where the assessment can be play-based. A face-to-face assessment for children is typically more engaging for your child and can provide better observation data for the assessor. Very Helpful Chats is not able to provide face-to-face assessments as all our assessors work remotely.

However, sometimes, it is not possible or practical for a family to access a face-to-face assessment for their child. They might live in a regional or remote area with limited access to services, or there might be a medical, developmental, or disability-related reason why a face-to-face assessment is not possible or practical. You are welcome to join our waiting list if a telehealth assessment is the right choice for your family.
