The identity theory of Autism - Autistic identities are created from an individual's values, interests and experiences (an experientially constructed identity), whereas neurotypical identities are created from an individual's social relationships and belonging to a collective group (a socially constructed identity). ***This is a great article for Autistic people who have not understood why they have been accused of being rude or disrespectful for consistently behaving with integrity and in accordance with their values.
Autistic peer-to-peer information transfer is highly effective - the Crompton et al., 2020 research study found that Autistic people communicate well with other Autistic people, non-Autistic people communicate well with other non-Autistic people and it is communication between neurotypes (Autistic with non-Autistic) that causes difficulties. This study challenged the traditional assumptions of Autistic people having inherent 'social impairments' and 'communication deficits' as communication difficulties between neurotypes were found to be bi-directional. I.e. non-Autistic people are just as 'impaired' or 'deficient' when they communicate with Autistic people.
